For immediate release:
1,486,963 kids have gotten free airplane rides, and yours could be next. Michael Harris is coordinator for the “Young Eagles” program at the Newark-Heath Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association. Harris says EAA began the program in 1992. Nationwide and locally, members provide free airplane rides to kids age 8-17 to give them “a taste of what it’s all about” according to Harris. While the EAA was founded by pilots interested in building their own planes, today it’s expanded to be a source of information and support for all kinds of pilots, including the nation’s biggest annual airshow at Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Anyone who’s earned the private pilot certificate can join EAA and be part of the Young Eagles program. All you need is to be a pilot and an EAA member, and there’s no requirement for special certification or even airplane ownership. The airplane ride is a learning experience for every kid. Harris says kids are able to look over an airplane and can see what takes part in a routine preflight inspection, and in the air see how the airplane is controlled and the procedures used at a non towered airport. The whole experience comes at absolutely no charge, just a signature authorization from a parent or guardian on the Young Eagle registration form. Harris says the pilots do it out of the goodness of their hearts, because they love flying so much they want to share the experience. Harris says the kids really enjoy the experience and some have even become part of the local chapter of the Civil Air Patrol or student pilots. The kids each receive a certificate signed by Young Eagles Chairman Harrison Ford.
