I wanted to share information about an upcoming event at Grimes Field in Urbana, Ohio. On the 18th of September we’ll host a Blessing of the Aircraft (flyer attached). I’d appreciate if you’d post this so interested pilots can attend.
Ceremonies for the Blessing of the Bikes and Blessing of the Fleet are common – I thought that aircraft could use a little help from time to time as well. It turns out that the patron Saint of Aviation (St. Joseph of Cupertino) is honored on the 18th of September, hence the date. That falls on a Friday this year. Figured that most guys that own aircraft have some control over their work schedule and could manage a half day off. So home for lunch, preflight their bird and come across the fence up here between 3:00 and 4:00. We’ll provide free coffee/cookies on arrival – and a commemorative decal for the participants to put in their flight log, on the aircraft or preserve elsewhere. At 4:30 a bagpiper will set the tone for the event (can’t simply launch directly into the ceremony!). At 5:00 Father Larry will bless the assembled aircraft, pilots and airport in a brief ceremony, then proceed to bless individual aircraft. The pilots will have plenty of time to depart and return to their home field before nightfall.
We look forward to seeing folks from your chapter at the event. As info, MERFI last weekend went well with over 200 aircraft at the fly in. We also set a new course record for our air race (17 racers participated). I’ll keep you in the loop on other future activities at the field.
